Nothing positive can be found from the tragedy that befell Virginia Tech University last Monday. But while we all seek explanations to myriad questions pertaining to gun control, the school’s crisis response operations, and the psychological profile of a mass murderer, one matter which seems to be crystal clear is this: the students at the Blacksburg, VA, school remain incredible examples of why we can maintain faith in the future of this school, even this country.

Thirty-three stones arrayed in an arc were erected as a memorial to those who perished. Yes, 33, which includes one for the killer, Seung-Hui Cho. Handwritten notes forgiving him and offering sympathy for his family adorned the memorial as well.

A needless, senseless incident that stained the lives of everyone in the Virginia Tech family, yet the community displays incredible compassion, even for the perpetrator of this heinous act.

It’s inevitable that whenever one hears the words "Virginia Tech," the first thought that will come to mind is the events of April 16. But it is the way that the students and community responded to those events that should be equally remembered, for that is the true testament to the school.

Go Hokies, indeed.
