New York Governor suspends comms director

NEW YORK: New York State Governor Elliot Spitzer suspended his communications director Darren Dopp without pay, and reassigned homeland security official Bill Howard for allegedly conspiring with state police to plant an embarrassing and damaging story on Senate GOP Leader Joe Bruno.

In a report issued yesterday by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Dopp and Howard along with acting state police superintendent Preston Felton are being accused of using the state police to compile and create misleading and false records on the senator’s use of state aircraft to travel from Albany to Manhattan with the intent of showing he was using the flights strictly for political purposes, a possibly illegal action.

The governor said he had no knowledge of the actions taken by his aides.

Dopp has served as communications director since 1999 for Spitzer, first as attorney general, then governor.
