On August 23, it was announced that USC's Annenberg School for Communication received a $2.5 million grant from Johnson Publishing, the company that publishes Ebony and Jet magazines. The grant will be used for The Johnson Communication Leadership Center, which will provide scholarships for students who are interested in studying communications and journalism issues that affect African-Americans.

Annenberg professor and director of PR studies, Jerry Swerling, tells me that the scholarships are available to any student who selects a major at the school, including PR students. This could lead to more PR professionals with specialized backgrounds in multicultural communications at a time when the number of initiatives targeted to the African-American community continues to grow.
