The New York Times has FINALLY announced that it is ending its ill-conceived two year old Times Select program, which placed its most popular columnists and its archive behind a pay wall. Times executives said they can make more money on online advertising through the increased traffic of a free site than they can through the subscription revenue of a paid site.

Free online media content seems to be entrenched as the conventional wisdom by now, mostly because nobody can figure out how to make any paid model work. Including the NYT. Here at PRWeek we place some of our content behind a pay wall, but we're a trade magazine and there are many important and complicated media considerations that go into that, so don't bring it up any more.
