Trail Watch: Fleeting Victory

Some observers were beginning to wonder if Fred Thompson's heart was really in the race, given his reportedly scarce appearances in New Hampshire. But he did recently show up in person, as tradition dictates in the state, to file the official papers for his candidacy couple of times since.

Some observers were beginning to wonder if Fred Thompson's heart was really in the race, given his reportedly scarce appearances in New Hampshire. But he did recently show up in person, as tradition dictates in the state, to file the official papers for his candidacy and has visited a couple of times since. But now his campaign has something of a new black eye because of the criminal past of one of his campaign advisors, who recently stepped down .

In contrast, Stephen Colbert is clearly a candidate who knows to quit when he's ahead, having decided to drop his bid for president after South Carolina Democratic leaders blocked his attempt to run in the primary there. What might have been? As with Al Gore and his never-to-materialize '08 run for president, we'll never know.
