NEW YORK: Cordis Corporation has hired Edelman to handle PR for the company's drug-coated stent Cypher, as the device maker attempts to market the stents directly to consumers for the first time.

The company, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, declined to go into further detail on Edelman's work, but Carol Goodrich, director of corporate communications for Cordis, said the campaign was launched to raise awareness of Cypher as a treatment option for Coronary Artery Disease.

To that end, the company launched the Web site www.cypherusa.com to present consumers with an abundance of education material about the disease, and the use of Cypher stents specifically, Goodrich said.

The campaign has drawn attention as cardiologists continue to focus on the stent category and more coated stent competitors are beginning to enter the market.
