NEW YORK: Edelman's sports and entertainment practice has tapped Mike Moran, who is retiring as chief communications officer for the US Olympic Committee, to chair its Olympic practice. Moran will assume his new post at the end of the month.

The hire comes 18 months before the 2004 Summer Olympic Games are set to begin. Edelman hopes that the Moran hire will help the firm attract some Olympic accounts as the Games draw closer.

"We think Mike will be an important part of our team," said Peter Land, head of Edelman's sports and entertainment practice. "We also think many of our younger account executives will learn a lot from him."

At the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games, the most recent Olympics, Edelman's clients included Samsung, Home Depot, and figure-skating bronze medallist Michelle Kwan.
