Dell selects GCI for corporate PR task

AUSTIN, TX: More than a year after Dell issued an RFP for corporate communications work, the computer company has handed the task to GCI Group.

The decision gives GCI another slice of Dell's PR pie, one that corporate communications VP Elizabeth Allen said would represent a "small increment" in billings for the firm. GCI first nabbed Dell's Americas account, and became its European agency of record last summer.

"We wanted a few really smart, key people to give us some advice, and we think we've found it," Allen said. A handful of firms pitched the account shortly after Dell issued the RFP in December 2001, and Allen said her staff continued to "scan the marketplace" in the interim.

Jeff Hunt, CEO of GCI Read Poland in Austin, will lead the overall account, while Rick Rice, GCI San Francisco president, will head corporate work.

GCI will offer executive positioning, financial communications support, and overall nonproduct counsel, Hunt said. It will also address environmental issues and publicize Dell's recycling program with help from Austin's Tuerff-Davis EnviroMedia.
