SAN FRANCISCO: Ruder Finn has acquired Switzer Communications, more than doubling the staff in its Bay Area office and boosting its technology practice.

Richard Funess, president of Ruder Finn/Americas, said, "I wanted to enhance our people and reputation (in the Bay Area). We were hit hard by the technology downturn."

Jessica Switzer will become MD of Ruder Finn's Bay Area office, now known as Ruder Finn/Switzer. Catherine Norman, who was MD of the San Francisco office and is on maternity leave, will continue to work from the San Francisco office as EVP and account director, focusing on the tech practice.

"What attracted me was that they wanted an acquisition for the right reasons," said Switzer. "They wanted a great firm that has a strong technology brand, a strong leadership team and great clients. One of the things I love about them is that they are independently owned, and when you've run your own firm for seven years like I have, you want to pick your new boss carefully."
