BOSTON: Eight months after stepping down as Porter Novelli's CEO, David Copithorne has joined Outside the Classroom as CMO. The three-year-old company provides online health-education programs, and currently works with more than 220 colleges to educate new students about binge drinking.

Copithorne said he learned of the new position through one of the company's investors.

"This brings together the social focus I'm interested in, and my starting in PR in Silicon Valley 25 years ago," said Copithorne. "When I heard what (CEO) Brandon (Busteed) was doing, I felt it was a really important cause. The statistics around binge drinking are frightening. Knowledge and education are power. And I wanted to help pull the marketing together."

Busteed said Copithorne's arrival will bring an increased focus on communications.
