TOY BOX: Cordless mouse is remotely intriguing

Since watching DVDs on PCs is becoming as common as checking e-mail, it seems like a logical next step is for mice to start resembling remote controls. In theory, Gyration's Ultra Cordless Optical Mouse is a great enhancement.

Now, not only can you operate your computer with a sleek cordless device, but it is sure to leave your coworkers longing for their own wire-free environment. Plus, you can pick it up, walk 25 feet away from your desk, turn your back to your computer (the device has no line-of-sight requirements, so it is not necessary to point it directly at your computer or receiver), and edit the latest memo you're working on. Wait, the point of that escapes me. In all fairness, the Ultra is not a complete bust. The "in-air" cursor control enables it to double as a presentation remote, in the event that users want to control a Power Point presentation from anywhere in the room. I must admit, being able to lean back in your chair and sift through your inbox as if you're channel surfing does have some appeal, albeit short-lived. The verdict: Novelty far outweighs practicality. Any questions?
