WASHINGTON: The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) has named Ed Belkin VP of communications. The former SVP for Hill & Knowlton will report to Richard Smith, PhRMA's senior VP of policy and strategic communications, when he assumes his new role on August 11.

Belkin said that in his new post he would be focused mostly on media strategy and external communications.

He also said that he is not replacing anyone directly, but is rather coming on board as

part of the group's recent restructuring of its communications department.

After Mark Merritt, the group's former head of communications, resigned earlier this year, PhRMA restructured its communications department. Instead of refilling Merritt's post, the association has expanded the responsibilities of Smith, former head of policy, by making him head of policy and communications.

Prior to joining H&K in 1995, Belkin served as senior director of communications for former Senator Dave Durenberger (R) of Minnesota.

Korn/Ferry performed the search for the new VP.
