LOS ANGELES: The communications director for California Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante (D) has decided to take an agency job, leaving her public-sector position only days after Bustamante announced his run for governor in the state's recall election.

Deborah Pacyna has joined Fleishman-Hillard as a VP, heading the public affairs team based in Sacramento. She will also be part of the firm's global public affairs practice. She will assume her new post in two weeks.

Pacyna said her decision to leave was made before Bustamante decided to run for the governor's office, and the two decisions are not related.

"I accepted the position about five days before [Bustamante] decided to run," she said. "Things were in flux."

Pacyna has been helping Bustamante with his campaign so far, including planning the press conference to announce his run, but said a replacement to her position has not yet been named.
