LOS ANGELES: Warner Bros. has hired a publicity chief for its newly formed specialty film label known as Warner Independent Pictures.

Laura Kim has been named EVP of marketing and publicity of the autonomous unit. She will report to the president of the company, Mark Gill, and will handle all PR and marketing efforts as the division begins to release its first films next year. The company plans on releasing about 10 films a year, each with a budget of about $20 million.

"It's not an accident that Laura is working on at least half of all the good independent films released this year," Gill said. Currently, Kim handles independent film for boutique agency mPRm. She will remain with the firm until early October.

Kim has handled publicity for several recent films, including Capturing the Friedmans and American Splendor. She has also handled several corporate clients, such as the Sundance Institute and the Independent Spirit Awards.
