LOS ANGELES: Weber Shandwick has been chosen as the first agency of record for law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips.

LOS ANGELES: Weber Shandwick has been chosen as the first agency of record for law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips.

The agency is charged with raising the profile of both the firm and its roster of attorneys on a national, regional, and practice level as it continues to acquire firms in new markets.

"They are in a heavy acquisition mode, and with each new element that comes there is a new component to their story," said WS' West Coast VP and director of financial services Eric Miller.

He said that in the future the relationship could also extend to helping Manatt clients with litigation communications.

Manatt partner Steven Reich recently penned an article summarizing the effects of a Manhattan federal judge's ruling on the confidentially of information given to a PR company by a high-profile white collar client. That article suggested that law firms needed to have established relationships with PR firms already in place to provide the greatest chance of confidentiality between the PR firm and the legal client, and that clients who contract directly with a PR firm are at a greater risk for having their communications admissible in court.

Manatt has offices in LA, Orange County, Palo Alto, Sacramento, New York, Albany, Washington, DC, and Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico.
