SBC expands into Midwest markets with famous calls

CHICAGO: SBC Communications is stressing low rates and the availability of service package deals in PR efforts supporting new long-distance offerings in five Midwestern states.

CHICAGO: SBC Communications is stressing low rates and the availability of service package deals in PR efforts supporting new long-distance offerings in five Midwestern states.

But the regional phone company also needs to address lingering consumer concerns about past service problems in the region, according to PR experts. SBC was given approval by the Federal Communications Commission to offer long-distance service in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana in late October. It began offering long-distance service in Michigan back in September.

The phone company kicked off the new service on October 24 with ceremonial first calls across the four states featuring politicians and celebrities. In Chicago, the director of a local theater company called Friends star David Schwimmer in Los Angeles. Events also were held for SBC employees, such as a rally for 2,000 at a suburban Chicago facility.
