WASHINGTON: Dittus Communications is launching a practice with a focus on providing high-level counsel to the energy industry, one of the most contentious sectors in DC today.

Leading the practice is Buddy Eller, who recently joined the small public affairs shop after a stint at Mirant Corporation, an Atlanta-based energy company. There he was director of external and regulatory affairs and the primary liaison to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

"Given Enron, the California energy crisis, and the historic blackout from last August, this is an industry that is kind of on its heels," said Eller. "But it's also an industry that's critical to the growth of the US economy."

A congressional conference committee recently resolved differences between House and Senate versions of a bill that would overhaul much of how energy is produced, transmitted, and regulated in the US. Nevertheless, final passage remains in doubt as a bipartisan coalition of senators have attempted to stand in the way of the legislation, claiming that it's a giveaway to energy companies and other special-interest groups.

Current Dittus energy clients include Alabama Power, the Coalition for Affordable and Reliable Energy, and the Alliance to Save Energy.
