The video quality is mediocre at best, but about what you'd expect from such a bare bones, low-priced piece of electronic equipment. Completely devoid of any messy wires or complicated set-up, it would make a great starter camcorder for an adolescent or young adult. The list price is $169.95, but once you buy the additional items necessary to operate it - six AA batteries (about $6), 2 VHS-C cassette tapes ($10 - $5 each, but you'll need two to equal the same amount of time that six batteries provides), and $30 for the VHS adapter that's needed for playing the smaller VHS-Cs - the tab more than clears the $200 mark. That's still a low price for a functioning camcorder, but a worthwhile consideration, nevertheless, when you're basing a purchase largely on value. The verdict: Plan to spend close to $50 more than list, but this is still an economical choice if you're in the market for a quality low-tier camcorder. Any questions? Write us at toybox@prweek.com
