ARMONK, NY: After 20 years in technology PR and the last eight at IBM as VP of corporate media relations, Bill Hughes is heading into the great unknown. He is preparing to leave IBM with no idea of what he wants to do next.

"People think I'm crazy when they hear I'm leaving, as I work for one of the greatest companies with one of the best communications teams in the business," said Hughes. "But I'm looking forward to the next great opportunity."

Hughes has also worked at Compaq, Intel, and Motorola, and at firms Miller Communications and Burson-Marsteller. Ed Barbini, VP of communications for the software group, will take over Hughes' role and will report to Jon Iwata, SVP of communications. Taking over for Barbini will be Joe Stunkard, director of corporate media relations.

Hughes said he wants to consider all his options, including corporate and agency opportunities, even outside of tech PR.
