DETROIT: General Motors has tapped Gary Grates to replace Tom Kowaleski as VP of North American communications.
Kowaleski has been promoted to VP of GM communications, a position formerly held by Steve Harris, and is now responsible for all of the company's global communications efforts. Harris retired from GM on the first of this year.
Grates - who most recently served as executive director of global internal communications at GM, in addition to handling some executive and financial communications responsibilities - has also been named to the GM North America Strategy Board, the senior management team responsible for the region's business. As a board member, he will oversee marketing, brand, financial, internal, and product communications for North America, the largest region within GM.
Prior to joining GM in January 2001, Grates served as CEO of GCI BoxenbaumGrates, a communications firm he helped sell to GCI Group.
