BENTONVILLE, AR: August "Gus" Whitcomb has resigned his post as MD of corporate communications at American Airlines to join Wal-Mart as director of PR for issues and litigation, effective the week of February 9.

At American, Whitcomb worked on the communications team through some of the toughest times for the airline, starting his tenure in 1993. He was part of the team that dealt with the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, which involved two American airplanes.

Whitcomb also served on American's communications team during numerous labor union negotiations and the resignation of CEO Don Carty. He succeeded Tim Doke, former VP of communications, who left in early 2003.

Wal-Mart is facing several litigious battles, including domain negotiations in planned store locations and recent discovery of labor-law violations.
