NEW YORK: The New York Jets took a major step toward the dream of having their own Manhattan stadium by hiring New York media-relations veteran Matthew Higgins to the new post of VP for strategic planning. Higgins is currently COO of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC).
Higgins, 29, served as New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's press secretary prior to his stint managing all PR efforts for the LMDC, a $2 billion agency created to oversee the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site.
The stadium is a central part of the proposed New York Sports and Convention Center, which would be built over the rail yards on Manhattan's West Side. In addition to Jets games, the complex would host expos, conventions, and the 2012 Olympics, for which New York City is a finalist. The facility would also help generate an estimated 6,700 new jobs a year.
"I'm honored to work on another project that will revitalize New York City," said Higgins.
Higgins will assume the new post in mid-February. He has been working on projects related to Lower Manhattan's recovery since the September 11 terrorist attacks.
