ATLANTA: Bernhard Harling has been named GM of PR for Porsche Cars North America. He'll report to the company's CEO, Robert Schwarzenbauer.

His hiring comes as Porsche talks about doubling its North American sales in the coming years. Harling will start his new job April 1.

Harling had been running his own New York-based PR agency, serving international clients doing business in North America and Europe, but he also has experience within the auto industry.

From 1993 to 1998, he oversaw North American communications for Daimler-Benz. Harling's career at Daimler began in 1971 and has included PR jobs in Germany and in North America.

The German luxury carmaker sold more than 30,000 vehicles in North America last year. Its February 2004 sales reached 2,185 units, compared with 1,186 in the same month last year.

Despite the growth, the sales of Porsche's Boxster model dropped 46% in February when compared with the same month last year, but the company is planning a new model to be launched in North America later this month.
