ALAMEDA, CA: Wind River, an embedded software company, has enhanced its communications team by creating the new position of chief communications officer. John Bruggeman, formerly VP of marketing at Mercury Interactive, has taken on the new position and also will serve as SVP of marketing.

Wind River, which develops operating system software that integrates other technologies, has become a major player on the strength of its software being a part of everything from cell phones to the Mars rovers. But Bruggeman said his new job was conceived when the company realized that while it did a good job of communicating with partners and customers to develop technology, it wasn't doing as good of a job of focusing on other audiences. Bruggeman will oversee Wind River's marketing, including communications and branding. "I really want to focus on the emergence of our market," said Bruggeman. "It's a really young category, and we have a real opportunity to establish ourselves as the leader." Bruggeman said he doesn't intend to change Wind River's relationship with its PR agency, Bite Communications. Besides Mercury, Bruggeman has worked at America Online and Lucent Technologies.
