HOPKINTON, MA: In the wake of three recent acquisitions, EMC is re-evaluating its PR needs. The acquisitions of Legato Software, VMware, and Documentum have transformed EMC from a storage platform vendor into one of the world's largest software providers, said Michael Gallant, director of PR.

Along with its own US agency, Porter Novelli, EMC is looking at PR consultants that serve the recently acquired businesses. Legato works with Ogilvy PR Worldwide, VMware with OutCast Communications, and Documentum with B3 Communications.

"We're taking a look at the competencies of all four agencies," Gallant said.

EMC has gotten many inquiries from PR firms over the past several months, said Gallant, as those agencies anticipated EMC would evaluate its PR needs as the company's focus changed. While EMC has met with a few firms, it is only focusing on the four for now.

EMC is handling the review internally, and Gallant said he did not know when a decision would be made.
