Houston, TX: Vollmer PR has secured the state of Texas' $1.9 million tourism account, the firm has announced.

Vollmer began representing the firm on July 1 and will continue to do so until August 31, 2005, according to Wendy Bengal, assistant press secretary for the governors; office.

The tourism account has been contested since early February, when Weber Shandwick won the account. The firm lost it after a protest from San Antonio-based Interlex that it had fared better on the department's numerical assessment.

PRWeek reported in May that seven agencies were in the bidding process, according to documents obtained through open records requests. Five firms repeated their bids: WS, Interlex, Vollmer New York-based Lou Hammond & Associates, and Andover, MA-based Global Tourism Strategies. Joining them were first-time contestants Scottsdale, AZ-based travel-marketing firm Connect-Worldwide and San Antonio advertising boutique 7 Records.

Vollmer PR CEO Helen Vollmer said the account win was a matter of perseverance.

"We knew we had the capabilities and felt strongly we could do a good job for the state," she said. "You have to believe in this business and we believe in the state of Texas."

Vollmer will run the account out of its Austin office, Vollmer said. Robert Nash, VP and GM of the Austin office, will lead the account.

The agency's approach will focus on media relations efforts and building partnerships with visitors' bureaus and travel trade organizations, Vollmer said.
