Siebel Systems searches for PR partner amid industry uncertainty

SAN MATEO, CA: CRM company Siebel Systems is looking for a new PR firm and doing so at a particularly volatile and competitive time in the enterprise software market.

Oracle is still pursuing its hostile takeover bid of PeopleSoft, SAP revealed it was recently considering a merger with Microsoft that has since been scrapped, and Salesforce.com just went public. In addition, Siebel itself just became the first company ever charged twice by the Securities and Exchange Commission under Regulation Fair Disclosure.

Steve Diamond, senior director of PR, confirmed Siebel had launched a search, but declined to say which agencies he was looking at. He did say the company has already picked a select group of firms and will not consider other agencies.

The outgoing agency is OnPR, which declined to comment. OnPR began working with Siebel in January 2003. Diamond said he hopes to have a new firm on board as the lead US agency by September, adding that Siebel is handling the search itself.

"Siebel has undergone an enormous transformation recently," said Diamond, who joined the company in February. "We have a new CEO. We are facing numerous opportunities, so we are seeking to partner with a firm to help us realize those opportunities, particularly in the area of corporate reputation."

The enterprise software market is facing a particularly sluggish sales cycle. During the recent earnings period, more than half of the 340 technology companies that preannounced their results have issued warnings that their earnings would miss expectations, CNET reported.
