ATLANTA: The American Cancer Society has hired Anne Isenhower, formerly a VP with Fleishman-Hillard, as its new director of national media relations.

Isenhower will start her new job during the first week of August.

Isenhower will coordinate media outreach by society PR people in New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Six people will report to her, said Greg Donaldson, national VP of corporate communications for the society.

The society searched for roughly four and a half months to fill the vacant spot, Donaldson said. It did not use a search firm.

Isenhower will work on educating the media about various activities the society does, Donaldson said. "There's a significant gap between who we are and understanding all that we do," he said.

The society hired Isenhower because of her mix of agency and non-profit, and health care experience, Donaldson said. Isenhower joined Fleishman in 1997 and worked in media relations, including handling PR for the agency.
