ATLANTA: Siemens Energy & Automation has hired Thomas Varney as its first VP of corporate communications.

Varney will report to CEO Aubert Martin and will oversee all external and internal communications, including PR and marketing and employee communications.

Varney is no stranger to Siemens. He spent the last three years as VP of communications at Medco Health. Before that, he worked for nearly 15 years with Siemens in New York, serving as managing director of PR in the US and as VP of communications for the Siemens Foundation. Prior to that, he served as southeast regional PR manager for Siemens.

The new position is about elevating the communications in the company and bringing the divergent communications roles under one person, said Varney.

"Communications has been fairly decentralized," he said. "Whether it's communications or trade shows or collateral, we want to have a consistency with the brand and messages. There needs to be more synergy."

Varney added that Martin understands the value of PR and how it can drive business, which will help elevate the role communications plays at the company.
