LOS ANGELES: Responding to a recent New Yorker article that highlighted the US military's policy of offering free breast implants and other cosmetic surgery to soldiers, a prominent pornography company has launched a PR campaign to honor women who refuse the offer.

A July article in the New Yorker reported that "personnel in all four branches of the military and members of their immediate families can get face-lifts, nose jobs, breast enlargements, liposuction or any other kind of elective cosmetic alteration, at taxpayer expense." Los Angeles-based Kick Ass Pictures, which specializes in films that feature "natural" women, launched a campaign called "Bullets not Boobs," immediately after publication of the article, offering honorably-discharged women who declined breast augmentations a day at the spa of their choice, and $500 worth of lingerie. "When Kick Ass president Mark Kulkis read the New Yorker article, "he was incensed to do something about it because he is very anti-implants," explained company PR head Jef Hickey. "We've had no shortage of woman coming out of the woodwork, giving us their discharge papers and proof they are natural." Although only a few women have taken advantage of the offer, the media has covered the effort extensively, resulting in international coverage. The story has been picked up by Reuters, Los Angeles Times, broadcast outlets, and talk radio, after the campaign was launched by Kick Ass star and former California gubernatorial candidate Mary Carey at a rally in front of a Hollywood military recruitment center.
