SUNNYVALE, CA: Maureen O'Connell has joined PalmSource as its new senior director of worldwide communications, replacing director of PR Cynthia Harris.

Prior to joining PalmSource, O'Connell was director of PR at Portal Software.

O'Connell, who will report to SVP of worldwide marketing Gabi Schindler, says she initially wants to focus on building more awareness for the company, which develops operating system software for handheld and mobile devices.

O'Connell said she will also evaluate PalmSource's PR needs. The company does not currently work with a PR agency in the US.

The company's future was shaken earlier this year when Sony Electronics announced in June it would no longer make handheld devices, including its popular Clie line, available in the US or Europe.

Sony was one of PalmSource's largest customers at the time. PalmSource also faces increasing competition from Microsoft's Windows CE software.

Harris recently left PalmSource to join PR agency Voce Communications as a director. As part of the management team, Harris will lead account teams, drive new business initiatives, and focus on growth strategies.
