MWW's LA contract win raises concerns

LOS ANGELES: MWW Group has won a $240,000 contract with the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) that is drawing fire from local activists.

LOS ANGELES: MWW Group has won a $240,000 contract with the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) that is drawing fire from local activists.

The firm is tasked with handling community relations work for a $2.2 billion bond measure for development and building.

Critics chastised the district for hiring outside PR help.

"Why does a government agency have to hire an outside consulting firm?" asked Bob Stern of the Center for Governmental Studies. "They could hire [in-house] for the same cost."

The firm won the account after a competitive RFP. Incumbent Fleishman-Hillard did not compete in the pitch.

The criticism comes after a year of controversy over the role of private PR agencies in government work. Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn ordered city agencies to stop using outside PR help, though they may still seek assistance for community relations and other limited activities.
