LOS ANGELES: Weber Shandwick has picked up a $150,000, 10-month contract to help smooth local relations as the Castaic Lake Water Agency (CLWA) upgrades its service.

CLWA is a public water agency that serves an area of 195 square miles in LA and Ventura counties. WS will be working on community relations for its Sand Canyon Water Pipeline and Reservoir project, which is an effort to upgrade the system with a new water-delivery pipeline in an area known as the Santa Clarita Valley.

"It's just an updating of the system, but is a pretty monumental task," said WS EVP Armando Azarloza. "There is going to be some disruption on the street, on the bike path that they have throughout the valley, and for pedestrians."

WS was brought on board by Flower & Associates, the winning bidder on the construction project. Azarloza said that his agency had not worked with the construction firm in the past, but he did have good relationships with board members of the CLWA.

In addition to community relations, WS is charged with media relations, legislative and community outreach, the development of a dedicated project website, print ads, brochures, e-mail newsletters, and direct mail.
