TOY BOX: There's life after 'Oprah' for Pontiac G6

The Pontiac G6 is likely to go through its life being called the car that Oprah gave away.

The Pontiac G6 is likely to go through its life being called the car that Oprah gave away.

Pontiac garnered major publicity last year by giving one G6 to everybody in the audience at the season-opener of Oprah. But once that glow was gone, I wondered how the car would drive. Very well, I've discovered. The G6 feels and handles like a much bigger car. It was a solid drive, even in snowy conditions, and was very roomy in the front. The distinguishing feature of the car is a front-to-back sun roof that can open in stages so you can just let air in over the driver or open it all the way back to the passengers in the second row. The roof was so much fun to play with that my daughter opened it in the snow just to get me wet. Car-nut friends of mine quibbled only with the price being high for what was included. The funky roof is part of a $3,145 option package that includes a CD player and cool wheels. The leather package on the model I tested added another $1,365, putting the car's price at over $28,000.
