Bonjean takes on post as Hastert's new comms head

WASHINGTON: Ron Bonjean, public affairs director for the Department of Commerce (DoC), will become House Speaker Dennis Hastert's (R-IL) on Monday.

WASHINGTON: Ron Bonjean, public affairs director for the Department of Commerce (DoC), will become House Speaker Dennis Hastert's (R-IL) on Monday.

Bonjean succeeds Pete Jeffries, who is leaving Hastert's office to become SVP for public policy at Hill & Knowlton.

A DoC spokeswoman said a replacement has yet to be named.

Because Bonjean also previously served as press secretary to former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS), he will have the rare distinction of having served as a communicator for the leaders of both chambers.

Hastert is also looking to hire a deputy communications director and a deputy press secretary.

Bonjean has worked for many other House members, including Mike Castle (R-DE), Kay Granger (R-TX), Jim Longley (R-ME), and Jay Kim (R-CA).
