NEW YORK: A group that played a key role in the passage of the Syrian Accountability Act has retained its former agency to bolster opposition to Syria's occupation of Lebanon.
The Lebanese American Council for Democracy has tapped 5W Public Relations for strategic counsel and media relations. The group is seeking to gain support from US political leaders and United Nations officials to pressure Syria to withdraw its troops.
The conflict between Lebanon and Syria crystallized last month after the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. Massive rallies have erupted across Lebanon both in support for and in opposition to Syria's military presence there.
Ronn Torossian, president of 5W, said the agency has been preparing daily briefing sheets for the media to respond to current events.
"Things are moving very quickly there," he said.
The Council previously worked with 5W to pressure the administration to pass the 2003 Syrian Accountability Act, which imposed sanctions on Syria for occupying Lebanon.
