NEW YORK: John Doorley, the former head of corporate communications at Merck, has joined New York University as academic director of the school's first graduate degree in PR.

Thirty-four students are enrolled in NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies masters of science in public relations and corporate communications.

Doorley led communications at Merck until January 2000.

"The demands on the profession are tremendous, and it also has a PR problem of its own," Doorley said. "The demands on public relations professionals are at once increasing in what they're expected to do and the expectations for the quality of work."

The department will offer courses on the history of PR as well as the theories behind it. Students will also have a chance to work with companies on their actual communications projects.

In addition to Doorley, instructors include Fraser Seitel and Helio Fred Garcia, both authors of widely used PR textbooks.
