MOSCOW: Vladimir Putin, Russia’s acting president and prime

minister, has named Alexei Gromov as his press secretary.

Putin, who was elevated to the presidency after Boris Yeltsin’s surprise

resignation on New Year’s Eve, tapped Gromov to be his spokesman last

week, one of several staff appointments he made during a whirlwind first

week on the job.

A career diplomat, Gromov was most recently head of the Kremlin press

service. He worked in the Foreign Ministry in various positions from

1982 to 1996, when he was trans-ferred to the Kremlin. In the Kremlin

hierarchy, press secretary of the president carries much more weight

than the head of the press service.
