NEW YORK: The New York State Democratic Committee has tapped Peter
Kauffmann as its new press secretary.
Kauffmann, a New York native who starts in his new post today, earned
his stripes by spending the last two years working as a deputy press
secretary for the Democratic National Committee in Washington, DC.
Kauffmann’s role will likely be a pivotal one. He will oversee
Democratic communications in a state that not only boasts a high-profile
US Senate race in November (Hillary Clinton vs. Rudy Giuliani), but also
one that is considered a must-win in the upcoming presidential
Kauffmann replaces Matthew Hiltzik, who left to serve as director of
corporate communications for Miramax (PRWeek, Dec. 20).
Last summer, Hiltzik was a constant companion to the first lady on her
New York ’listening tour.’ He also worked on victorious 1998 US Senate
and attorney general campaigns in New York.
One of Kauffmann’s tasks will be to enhance the strong communications
lattice Hiltzik established with party activists and news media upstate
(a key battleground in the upcoming Senate race). While Clinton’s
campaign should be more than amply financed and staffed, the
communications network must put forth a message that inspires strong
Democratic voter turnout.
