NEW YORK: Despite persistent rumors that Robinson, Lerer &

Montgomery (RL&M) partner Ken Lerer is quitting to join America Online,

Lerer will continue in his current role as the agency’s president.

However, Lerer did confirm that he has been named one of AOL’s SVPs.

The title, insiders said, merely formalizes a role that he has been

occupying for the last three years.

Lerer’s AOL ties are deep, as he has been friends with president and COO

Bob Pittman for years. His new title there, however, is not tied to his

communications background.

While Lerer declined comment, others speculated that the SVP title is a

means of compensating him personally for services rendered in the

past.

The agency has long provided PR support for AOL’s in-house

communications staff and has been its agency of record for the past

three years.

RL&M, which is scheduled to handle the launch of Oxygen Media’s cable TV

channel later this year, has worked extensively for media giants like

NBC and Viacom, though its relationship with the latter is up in the air

pending the CBS/Viacom merger.
