DIARY: Ty threat to can Beanies a success

Beanie Babies are back.

Beanie Babies are back.

Beanie Babies are back.

Actually, they never really left, so it’s looking more and more like Ty

Inc’s announcement last summer that it would discontinue production of

the popular collectibles was just a PR stunt to boost sales.

Ty conducted a poll on its Web site between December 31 and January 2,

asking consumers whether it should keep making the plush toys. Here’s a

shocker: of the 209,000 people who voted, 91% said production of the

cuddly creatures should continue.

Many onlookers suspected that the ’Beanie retirement’ threat was a ruse,

especially since Ty had recently expanded its production facilities and

sought to trademark several proposed Beanie names.

Still, even if it was, the poll did more than get collectible freaks

revved up for line after line of sure-to-appreciate-in-value

Beanies.

Ty asked each voter to contribute 50 cents to the Elizabeth Glaser

Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and promised to donate three times the amount

voters pledged. The stunt generated approximately dollars 420,000.
