DIARY: Millennium dawn yawn grips Devon

Oh, those crazy ad folks - what will they think of next?

Oh, those crazy ad folks - what will they think of next?

With businesses across the land hawking their wares as the official

timepiece/toilet paper/ rat poison of the millennium, Pennsylvania ad

agency Devon Direct (owned by Euro RSCG) took a novel approach to the

Y2K marketing madness. On a tiny island near New Zealand, the firm

joined schoolchildren and a CNN TV crew at a ceremony atop Mt. Hakepa,

where they ushered in the world’s first sunrise in 2000.

’I see the dawning of the millennium as an opportunity for people to

bring to bear a higher spiritual awareness in their daily lives,’ said

Devon’s Brian Green. Really? We see it as a dollars 4,500 flight and a

colossal waste of time.

Green and three agency cronies spent most of the time scrambling to

capture a photo to be plastered all over gifts to clients. We hope their

digital cameras were Y2K compliant, or all they’ll bring back are shoes

covered in sheep poop.
