SAN FRANCISCO: Hoping to take advantage of the growing convergence

of entertainment and new media, the LA-based PR firm Bender Helper

Impact has opened its doors in San Francisco.

’We’ve been operating out of the Bay area,’ said partner Dean

Bender.

’But there’s just so much activity now that we felt we had to formalize

our presence.’

Bender believes his firm’s entertainment focus should give it an edge in

soliciting new clients. ’Most of the firms already in the San Francisco

area do your traditional software, hi-tech or corporate PR,’ he

said.

’We’re bringing a dimension of entertainment and will be able to talk to

new media companies from that perspective.’

Bender questions whether west coast clients have begun to rely on the

tried-and-true, rather than search for the agency that best meets their

needs.

’We think that there’s a wealth of companies up there that have been

using the same PR companies over and over again,’ he said. ’Because of

our background there’s an unlimited amount of potential business in the

region.’ Bender Helper’s Bay area clients include VM Labs, which is

preparing to launch enhanced DVD boxes that play movies, and other

interactive entertainment software.

Bender conceded that the lure of stock options and other fast money in

the Internet economy has made recruiting and retaining a talented PR

staff increasingly difficult, especially in the Bay area. But he quickly

added, ’We’re hopefully offering some other perks. We can’t compete with

stock options, but what we’re offering is a chance to be a part of a new

entrepreneurial experience and a chance to move up pretty fast in our

organization.’
