And now, yet another one from the ’some folks just don’t get it’
A recent magazine ad for Hawaiian Tropic suntan lotion depicts a
well-tanned man being dragged off by the Ku Klux Klan. The ad, which ran
in a local edition of Rolling Stone magazine, portrays Klan members
carting off the incredulous man from a private swimming pool, ostensibly
because his dark Hawaiian Tropic tan has convinced the white
supremacists that he’s black.
’The tone is humorous. The idea is: You’re going to get so black that
the Ku Klux Klan is going to come after you,’ said Carlos Perez,
creative director of Grey Argentina.
Actually, the idea is that your ad agency will get so blackballed, no
clients will come near it. What kills us is that agency poohbahs looked
at this ad and said, ’It’s about time we got the Klan in some ads.’
Shockingly, human rights groups were not amused, calling the ad racist
and demanding that Rolling Stone pull it.
