NEW YORK: Initiating an aggressive push beyond its core electronic

distribution service, PR Newswire has acquired Internet monitoring

service eWatch from WAVO Corp.

The deal not only expands PRN’s repertoire, but gives the company

another powerful weapon in its battle for wire-service supremacy.

’Not only will we be distributing the news, but we’ll be able to report

back to customers what’s being said about them,’ said PRN EVP of global

marketing John MacLeod Williams.

While eWatch will initially be run as a stand-alone business unit,

Williams said it will eventually be folded into PRN’s nascent global

monitoring and measurement division.

Joint eWatch and PRN clients reacted to the news enthusiastically. ’It’s

a natural pairing in terms of coordinating the front-end distribution

and the back-end monitoring,’ said Jon Austin, MD of corporate

communications at Northwest Airlines.

But many eWatch clients work with PRN foe Business Wire, a situation

that could lead to an all-out fracas between the two wire services.

Williams said the issue has not yet been addressed, though PRN may allow

eWatch clients to use their incumbent distribution service.

’We haven’t made any decisions yet,’ said Williams. ’But let’s face it:

it is leverage.’

A spokesman for Business Wire declined comment.
