Diary - PR legend laughs at Brill’s contempt

Never say that Howard Rubenstein isn’t a good sport.

Never say that Howard Rubenstein isn’t a good sport.

Following a Brill’s Content item that poked fun at him and his clients,

the legendary PR vet called the magazine’s editors with a single

question: how could he get a copy of that funny little caricature they

ran of him?

The article’s tone was somewhat snarky - it pondered why Rubenstein is

considered so good at what he does, despite the fact that his clients

(Donald Trump, Leona Helmsley and George Steinbrenner) are so hated. ’It

was a very amusing piece,’ Rubenstein said. ’But the writer was

off-base.

All a good PR person can do is get his client’s voice heard. No one can

counteract the kind of bad press that comes from Leona Helmsley being

put in jail.’

And as for the cartoon? ’It was too expensive to buy,’ he quipped. When

it was suggested that Trump might be able to afford snagging it for him

as a birthday gift, he replied, matter-of-factly, ’All my clients could

afford it.’
