leaving us many moments of celebrity weirdness to ponder.



Halle Berry wept her way through both her speech and press conference,

while Sarah Jessica Parker managed to thank anybody who has ever watched

Sex and the City. But Tom Cruise, picking up an award for his

performance in Magnolia, proved that an actor’s best friend is whoever

fends off those irritating journalists.



First on his list of thanks was publicist Pat Kingsley, whose firm, PMK,

is regarded with exasperation by journalists. Her strict veto over

questions allowed in interviews with celebs like Cruise, Calista

Flockhart and Tom Hanks resulted in a freeze-out by NBC’s Today show

last summer.



But she must be keeping the press-shy Cruise happy. Looks like the

reporters will have to keep faxing those questions ...
