LONDON: London Underground, better known as ’the tube’ has

appointed its first-ever board-level director of communications.

Tony Maguire will join the organization in March, reporting directly to

MD Derek Smith. Maguire arrives from British American Tobacco’s New

Zealand outpost, where he has been serving as corporate affairs

director.

Prior to Maguire’s appointment, London Underground’s most senior PR post

was head of marketing communications - which was vacated almost a year

ago when Geoff Ellerton resigned. In the interim, media relations

manager Philip Carter had served as the company’s top PR voice.

Having run media-training seminars for London Underground before leaving

for New Zealand three years ago, Maguire is familiar with its senior

management. He will now have direct responsibility for its press,

publicity and public affairs divisions.
