external communications.

VP William Pate will now lead the company’s PR charge, looking after PR,

media relations and advertising. Previously, these duties were scattered

among divisional chiefs and state reps.

BellSouth spokesperson Jeff Battcher said that the effects of the

layoffs on the communications group had been exaggerated, noting that

regular staff attrition - Deborah Spicer moved to Hill & Knowlton while

Kristy Medera left for Ciba Geigy - gave the impression that big changes

had taken place in the PR department.

’The effect on our communications group has been minimal,’ he said.
