BRUSSELS: The European Union's moves to sponsor the changeover to a

single currency will lead to a windfall for continental PR agencies,

sources told PRWeek last week.

Since 1996, the European Commission has spent more than dollars 100

million on information campaigns for the single currency, and the

organization will ante up another dollars 32 million in 2000. Under

commission proposals, two-thirds of the money will be given directly to

member countries, while the rest will be used to pay for campaigns

across the EU.

Brussels last week released its campaign strategy for the introduction

of the euro, focusing on informing small- and medium-sized companies as

well as the public of the steps needed for the cash changeover to go

smoothly.
